Japan 3, even Subaru tumble in a rough September for U.S. sales

Toyota and Honda posted their steepest sales declines in years last month while Nissan continued to struggle and Subaru ended its 93-month winning streak. It was all part of a September that was thrown off course by quirks in the sales-reporting calendar.

Quote:
"The pace of swapping [cars for light trucks] has continued to slow down. But there's too many people bringing out too many products in that SUV arena" to have reached the bottom, said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager of the Toyota Division at Toyota Motor North America. "But with a lot of our competitors abandoning our car buyers, I'm gonna continue to take as much of that share as possible."

Did you know? Only four models — the low-volume Lexus RC coupe, the still-new Lexus UX, the recently reintroduced Toyota Supra and the discontinued Toyota Venza — showed year-over-year sales gains in September.

Japan's biggest automakers posted double-digit declines in U.S. sales in September behind sharply weaker car and light-truck demand. U.S. light-vehicle sales are forecast to drop in September in part because there were two fewer selling days and the absence of Labor Day holiday volume.
